If you’re considering a tummy tuck here’s what you should know about this popular cosmetic surgery.

From multiple pregnancies to losing a significant amount of weight quickly, there are many reasons someone might choose to get an abdominoplastyabdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck. Our Oak Brook, Elmhurst, and Hinsdale, IL, plastic surgeon Dr. Alexandrina Saulis understands that anyone interested in cosmetic surgery will have questions before deciding whether this is the right treatment option for them. Here are some questions about tummy tucks answered.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure in which our plastic surgeon will remove excess tissue and skin from the stomach to create tighter, firmer results around the midsection.

Is a tummy tuck different than liposuction?

It’s important to make the distinction between a tummy tuck and procedures that are designed to help patients with weight loss. While liposuction can be used to remove a significant amount of fat from an area of the body, a tummy tuck is a far more conservative option for those who are dealing with some bulging around the abdomen due to loose skin and excess fat. People should already be within a healthy, stable weight range before undergoing a tummy tuck.

How long is the recovery period?

Most patients will need to take one to two weeks off from work after surgery. Of course, there are many factors that can affect how long it takes for a patient to heal. For about six weeks you will wear a binder around your stomach to provide support and to reduce fluid buildup. You will also need to avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for several weeks.

How long do results last?

As with any cosmetic surgery, the goal is to create long-lasting and even permanent results. It’s important that after surgery that you maintain a healthy weight by participating in regular exercise and eating a healthy, balanced diet. If patients choose not to follow a healthier lifestyle they may find that their results do not last as long or are reversed over time. A tummy tuck cannot prevent the natural effects of aging.

Who is a good candidate for treatment?

As with any cosmetic treatment, an ideal candidate will have realistic goals and expectations regarding their treatment and the results they are looking to achieve. It’s important to understand that a tummy tuck will not help you lose weight and should not be considered a weight-loss tool.

An abdominoplasty is designed to help those who are within their ideal weight remove excess, sagging skin while improving the shape and contour of the body. Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, our plastic surgeon Dr. Saulis will perform a physical examination to determine whether a tummy tuck is the right option for you.
