Do you have stubborn and unwanted flab in areas that make you think twice about wearing your favorite two-piece out in public? If you've got a belly and are tired of feeling self-conscious about it, then it's time you did something about it - and abdominal plastic surgery is just the thing you need.

Otherwise known as a "tummy tuck," abdominoplasty both eliminates excess flab and tightens the surrounding muscles, which is Abdominoplastydifferent from liposuction because it doesn't stop at removing the fat.

Check out a few interesting facts that your Naperville area plastic surgeon Alexandrina S. Saulis, M.D., F.A.C.S, wants you to know about abdominoplasty:

How Does It Work?

A total tummy tuck is performed with the use of general anesthesia. Once the patient is unconscious, the plastic surgeon will make a horizontal incision along the person's waistline extending from one hip bone to the other. Next, the surgeon gently splits the skin from the abdominal wall. After tightening the muscles in the area, the surgeon will remove the excess fat before closing the flap of flesh. Finally, sutures are used to close up the incision site.

What Will My Immediate Recovery Period Look Like?

Immediately following the procedure, your plastic surgeon may prescribe antibiotics to avoid the risk of infection. This is done with all surgeries. Occasionally, drainage tubes help remove excess fluid for the first few days post-surgery. Abdominal stitches will be removed no later than a week after surgery, and oftentimes sooner. Despite being a major surgery, most tummy tuck patients are back to normal within a month, and their scar will begin to fade a few short months later. Continued exercise will help tone the abdominal muscle from that point forward.
