About Breast Reduction Surgery

The surgery can be performed on an inpatient and outpatient basis. In many instances, the surgery may be medically necessary and may be covered by one's insurance company. With breast reduction surgery, general anesthesia is used. Our Elmhurst, IL plastic surgeon Dr. Saulis will make an anchor-shaped incision around the areola vertically and then horizontally across the crease below the breast. Any breast tissue, fat or excess skin is removed to reach the desired size of the patient. Stitches are used to close the incision. If the reduction is dramatic, the areola may need to be removed and re-positioned on the breast itself. The surgery lasts about three hours.

In terms of recovery, drainage tubes are inserted into the breasts to help remove excess fluid the first few days after breast reduction surgery. A dressing will cover this area. Sensitivity, bruising and swelling is normal for the first few weeks post-op. Stitches are removed about 7 to 10 days after surgery. No strenuous activity or heavy lifting is allowed for a period of up to four weeks, and most patients go back to work in one to two weeks depending on what type of work they do.
