According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, liposuction ranks as one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the U.S. It's even one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the world. It's a way to lose excess fat to help a person achieve a more desirable figure, not to be confused with surgeries that help with weight loss for medical reasons. Our Elmhurst, IL, plastic surgeon Dr. Alexandrina Saulis of Aesthetic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, serving Oak Brook, Hinsdale and Elmhurst, IL, and the nearby region, offers this procedure and would like you to understand more about it before booking a consultation.

General Information

Liposuction is a surgical treatment our Elmhurst, IL, plastic surgeon offers to remove unwanted fat. It uses suctioning. You may opt to have the procedure on different areas of your body where fat accumulation commonly occurs, such as your thighs, abdomen, buttocks, neck, or arms.

This procedure is for people who are at a generally stable weight but have an area where fat accumulation is, and it's making them self-conscious. It's for people who've tried to lose weight with diet and exercise in those areas without any success.

Qualifications

It's important to note that the procedure isn't for people who have health problems and would like to correct them with weight loss. These individuals would benefit more from diet changes, exercise, or bariatric surgery.

Additionally, a person needs to have overall good health to have liposuction. Certain health conditions could pose a problem and increase the risk of complications during surgery, such as if the person has diabetes, is immunocompromised, or has coronary artery disease.

Safety

In most cases, liposuction is safe. Complications tend to be rare and only minor. However, like with any other surgical procedure, there are risks. For instance, you may notice your skin is bumpy or wavy where you had the fat removed. The nerves at the site may be irritated or become numb. This is only temporary.

We know that some individuals may still be a little hesitant to come into our office or even consider surgery because of the threat of Covid-19. We want you to know that we are still taking every precautionary measure including wearing PPE and regularly sanitizing the office to keep you safe. Have questions about how we’re protecting our patients against Covid-19? Just call and ask us.

Length of a Liposuction Procedure

The surgery can take several hours if you're having a large amount of fat removed. However, for most people, the surgery takes less than three hours. Depending on the anesthesia used, you may need to stay for an hour or so to make sure it wears off properly.

At Aesthetic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery serving Oak Brook, Hinsdale and Elmhurst, IL, Dr. Saulis offers liposuction to help you achieve the appearance you desire. It's a relatively safe procedure and is often done on an outpatient basis.
