Could a tummy tuck provide you with the tighter figure you want?

There are many people out there that despite a healthy diet and regular exercise aren’t seeing the results they want, particularly around abdominoplastytheir midsection. There are a lot of factors that play into excess fat and skin around the stomach and sides; fortunately, our Oak Brook, Elmhurst, and Hinsdale, IL, plastic surgeon Dr. Alexandrina Saulis offers abdominoplasty to help you achieve the appearance you are looking for.

What is abdominoplasty?

You’ve probably heard of an abdominoplasty being called by its colloquial name, “tummy tuck”. The goal of our Oak Brook, Elmhurst, and Hinsdale, IL, cosmetic surgeon is to make your stomach flatter by removing excess fat and skin while also tightening the abdominal muscles.

Even though an abdominoplasty shouldn’t be confused with liposuction, this is still considered a major surgery so it’s important to know more about it before deciding whether it’s right for you.

What happens during an abdominoplasty?

This will depend on whether you are getting a complete or partial abdominoplasty. During a complete tummy tuck, an incision will be made across the stomach from hipbone to hipbone. From there, we will remove excess fat and skin from the area while also repositioning the belly button.

If you are dealing with excess fat just below the navel, then a partial abdominoplasty may be all you need. While we will still remove excess fat and skin from this area, we won’t need to move the belly button.

How long is the recovery period?

You will have to wear a binder around your stomach for several weeks, which will provide the area with support and prevent fluid from building up. You will need to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity during your recovery period.

You will continue to come in for follow-up appointments to make sure everything is healing properly. During this time we can chat with you about when it might be safe to return to your regular physical activities.

Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

Healthy men and women who are looking to remove excess fat and skin around their midsections may find a tummy tuck to be the best treatment option for them. This can be a great cosmetic treatment for women who have excess skin or weakening abdominal muscles due to pregnancies, as well as patients who used to be obese but lost a lot of weight and are dealing with loose skin as a result.

A tummy tuck isn’t ideal for patients who still want to lose a lot of weight or for patients who are still considering getting pregnant, as pregnancy can affect the results of your abdominoplasty.

Dr. Alexandrina Saulis is proud to offer comprehensive cosmetic surgery in Hinsdale, Naperville, Oak Brook and Elmhurst, IL. Call Aesthetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery today if you are ready to find out whether you could be a good candidate for abdominoplasty.

Do you want to find out if you could be a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

Do you find that despite eating healthy and hitting the gym regularly that you still can’t seem to run off excess flab around your stomach? abdominoplastyHave you had difficulty losing weight post-pregnancy? What is an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)?

This cosmetic surgery is actually one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries around and it is designed to remove excess skin and fat around the abdomen to help offer tighter and smoother results.

Who is a good candidate for this treatment?

There are many reasons to consider getting a tummy tuck. From pregnancy to significant weight loss, there are several scenarios that can cause excess fat and/or loose, flabby skin around the middle. Of course, it is important that patients understand that this procedure is not considered a weight loss treatment.

Patients should already be at their ideal weight before considering a tummy tuck. This procedure is done to remove excess skin and to tighten the skin around the abdomen to reduce stretch marks and to get a smoother and shapelier frame. A good candidate will be someone who understands what this procedure can offer, as well as its limitations.

What does this procedure entail in Oak Brook, Elmhurst, and Hinsdale?

First, the patient will be placed under anesthesia. The type of anesthesia we use will be discussed prior to treatment to determine the best kind for you. Once you are under the effects of anesthesia, we will make an incision below the belly button. The type of incision we make will depend on how much skin is present. Once the skin is lifted and shaped, we will also repair the abdominal muscles. The skin that has been pulled taut when then be sutured together.

When dieting and crunches do nothing to firm up your flabby stomach, it's time to consider abdominoplasty. The procedure, commonly abdominoplastycalled a tummy tuck, not only gets rid of excess fat and skin, but also tightens the muscles in your stomach. Our Hinsdale, Oak Brook and Elmhurst, IL area plastic surgeon, Dr. Alexandrina Saulis, shares a few facts about the procedure.

Who can benefit from abdominoplasty?

Your abdomen may no longer be flat if you've been pregnant, particularly if your abdominal muscles separated during the pregnancy. The problem is more likely to occur as you get older, whether you've ever been pregnant or not. Take a look at your relatives. If their stomachs look like yours, your protruding abdomen may be a result of genetics, not anything you did or didn't do. You may also notice sagging if you've had abdominal surgery, or you've lost a lot of weight. Abdominoplasty is an excellent option in all of these cases.

Abdominoplasty may not be a good choice if you smoke, haven't yet reached your goal weight or plan to become pregnant.

What happens during an abdominoplasty?

Before the procedure begins, you'll receive either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. A horizontal incision will be made between your pubic hair and your belly button. After your abdominal muscles are repaired and skin and fat are removed, the incision will be closed with stitches or clips. In most cases, abdominoplasties in the Hinsdale, Oak Brook and Elmhurst area are outpatient procedures, which means you'll get to go home a few hours after your procedure.

What is the recovery period like?

Prescription pain medication will help keep you comfortable during the first several days after your surgery. You may also notice some abdominal swelling initially. You'll probably need to take about two weeks off from work, although the amount of time may vary based on the type of work you do. Wearing a binder for a few months can reduce swelling and help support your abdominal muscles. Most people can resume their normal activities, including exercising, about six weeks after surgery.

Abdominoplasty can give you a flatter, more sculpted abdomen. Call Hinsdale, Oak Brook and Elmhurst, IL area plastic surgeon, Dr. Saulis to schedule an appointment to discuss the procedure.

You may never have considered plastic surgery before, but if you've adopted an appropriate diet and exercise plan to help you improve liposuctionyour look and still have areas that won't respond to your lifestyle changes, liposuction, abdominoplasty or breast augmentation can help you achieve the body you've been working for. At Aesthetic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in Oak Brook and Naperville, IL, Dr. Alexandrina Saulis is board-certified in performing procedures like liposuctions, abdominoplasty and breast augmentation to help her patients improve their appearance and confidence about their bodies. Here is a brief overview of the process for each procedure.

What is an abdominoplasty?
An abdominoplasty, often referred to as a "tummy tuck", is a surgical operation involving the removal of excess fat and skin from the abdomen and the tightening of the muscles of the abdominal wall. It is popular for patients who have experienced excessive weight loss, or for women after pregnancy.

What is the procedure like?
A typical abdominoplasty takes about two to five hours. The patient is given a sedative during the procedure. A full abdominoplasty includes a horizontally-oriented incision between the pubic hairline and the naval. Once the skin is lifted, the abdominal muscles will be repaired. A second incision is sometimes necessary around the belly button to remove excess skin. Once this is finished, the upper abdomen skin is pulled down and the extra skin is trimmed. A new opening for the belly button is created.

What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a popular surgical procedure where breast implants are used to increase the size of your breasts or restore volume. It is also a popular procedure for individuals after excessive weight loss or pregnancy. This procedure can increase fullness, improve balance to your figure, and the projection of your breasts.

What is the procedure like?
After a sedative is given, Inconspicuous incisions are made to minimize visual scarring. Popular incisions include:

  • Peri-areolar incision: This is a half circle around the lower edge of the areola.
  • Infra-mammary incision: This is made in the fold where the lower part of the breast meets the chest wall.
  • Trans-axillary Incision: This is made in the armpit. Once the incision is made a channel to the breast is created, as well as a pocket for the implant.

Your doctor will discuss the best option for you based on desired breast size and the type of implant. After the incision is made, an implant made of a silicone outer shell will be placed into a pocket. This is either, under the pectoral muscle, or directly behind the breast tissue over the pectoral muscle. The implant will be filled with a saline solution until the desired size is reached. Once the incision is closed, drainage tubes may be inserted to remove excess liquid.

What is liposuction?

Often shortened to "lipo" by both doctors and patients, liposuction is a cosmetic procedure offered by your Oak Brook and Naperville plastic surgeon, Dr. Alexandrina Saulis, that eliminates excess fat deposits that have built up around the thighs, hips, abdomen, back, upper arms and even the chin and neck.

What is the procedure like?
A liposuction procedure  starts with an infusion of local anesthetic to help to numb the targeted areas. Tiny incisions in the skin will allow a thin tube, called a cannula, to loosen the structure of the fat deposits, which will then be suctioned out of the body through a vacuum attached to the tube. Your Oak Brook and Naperville plastic surgeon will discuss your goals with you and evaluate your condition to determine if you are a good candidate for liposuction. Generally, healthy adult patients whose weight falls within 30% of where they want to be - for example, a person who weighs about 220 pounds and whose target weight is 150 would fit into this category - and who are dealing with stubborn areas of fat that don't respond to good diet and exercise habits make excellent candidates.

If you're wondering about any of these procedures, we encourage you to contact Aesthetic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery in Oak Brook and Naperville, IL to set up a consultation with Dr. Alexandrina Saulis. We look forward to helping you!
