Find out more about tummy tuck surgery and how it can give you the sculpted waistline you want.

Are you frustrated that a healthy diet and regular exercise aren’t giving you the flatter stomach you had hoped for? The stomach can be one of the most challenging and frustrating areas of the body to tone. Fortunately, our Oak Brook, IL, plastic surgeon Dr. Alexandrina Saulis offers abdominoplasty, a surgical procedure that smooths the abdomen and can even tighten the muscles of the stomach for a firmer and more toned appearance. So, is abdominoplasty right for you? Here’s what you should know,

You Should Already Be at Your Ideal Weight

Abdominoplasty should not be confused with procedures such as liposuction. While our Oak Brook IL cosmetic surgeon can sculpt and shape the figure you want with an abdominoplasty, this is not considered a weight-loss procedure. We will want to make sure that you are within 10-15 pounds of your ideal weight before undergoing a tummy tuck.

You Should Have Realistic Expectations

As with any type of cosmetic surgery, patients must understand what procedures such as an abdominoplasty can and can’t do. This procedure won’t take the place of a healthy lifestyle or diet nor will it help you lose weight, but an abdominoplasty can remove excess fat and skin, which may be an ideal option for someone who lost a lot of weight quickly and is looking to get a tighter, more contoured stomach. Write down your treatment goals and bring them into our office so that we can determine whether this procedure is right for you.

There Will Be Some Downtime

It’s also important that anyone looking to undergo an abdominoplasty understands that because this is a surgical procedure there will be some post-surgical downtime. We need to let your body rest and heal properly, so you will need to avoid any strenuous activities for several weeks. You may also need someone to help you with everyday tasks around the house, especially if it involves lifting or carrying.

What Should I Expect When I Come into Your Office?

Have you been considering abdominoplasty or other plastic surgery? Perhaps you were getting ready to schedule a consultation with us before the current COVID-19 crisis occurred. With the current COVID crisis, we understand some patients may have concerns. It’s important for our patients to know that we take their safety very seriously and our Elmhurst, IL, plastic surgeon Dr. Alexandrina Saulis and her team are taking every necessary safety precaution to continue providing patients with cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Office procedures in place to reduce COVID-19 infection risks include limiting patient consultations to minimize exposure in our waiting rooms as well as rigorous cleaning of the office between patients. Through every step of your abdominoplasty or other aesthetic procedure, we strive to provide the best service possible to our patients while reducing any risk of infection. A consultation with our Elmhurst, IL, plastic surgeon Dr. Alexandrina Saulis can help you determine if an abdominoplasty is right for you.

If you want to find out if you’re a good candidate for an abdominoplasty, our plastic surgery team here in Oak Brook, Hinsdale, and Elmhurst, IL, can determine whether abdominoplasty or other cosmetic options will give you the results you want. Here’s what our patients should know about getting tummy tuck surgery.

Often referred to as a “tummy tuck,” abdominoplasty is a popular surgical procedure performed by our Elmhurst, IL, plastic surgeon, Dr. AbdominoplastyAlexandrina Saulis, to remove excess fat and skin around the stomach.

A tummy tuck is a great treatment to help flatten stomachs and even tighten abdominal muscles. Of course, before undergoing cosmetic surgery it’s important to understand the entire abdominoplasty process.

When to Consider Abdominoplasty

Since abdominoplasty involves surgery and recovery time, it’s important to understand who is ideal for treatment. Since this is not a weight-loss treatment, an ideal candidate will be an individual that is already maintaining healthy body weight and body mass index (BMI), but is still unable to achieve a flatter stomach through diet and exercise alone.

There are many factors that can lead to the loose, sagging skin and excess fat around the abdomen. These factors include:

  • Past surgeries (e.g. bariatric surgery)
  • Extreme fluctuations in weight
  • Pregnancy
  • Heredity
  • Aging

Tummy tuck surgery isn’t ideal for those who deal with significant weight fluctuations or women who plan to become pregnant, as these factors can affect long-term results. A tummy tuck may also be able to reduce the appearance of stretch marks by tightening and stretching the skin.

Getting an Abdominoplasty

Our expert plastic surgeon will perform your abdominoplasty right here in her Elmhurst, IL, practice. General anesthesia is used for this procedure, so you will be asleep during the procedure. Tummy tuck surgeries usually take anywhere from 2-5 hours. During your consultation, we will be able to give you a better idea of the length of your surgery and the recovery time once we understand the results you are hoping to achieve with this procedure.

Recovery varies from patient to patient but typically takes weeks and even months for a full recovery. During your recovery process, it’s important to avoid activities such as heavy lifting or exercise. Our plastic surgeon will be able to tell you when you can return to your normal routine after surgery.

If you’re considering a tummy tuck here’s what you should know about this popular cosmetic surgery.

From multiple pregnancies to losing a significant amount of weight quickly, there are many reasons someone might choose to get an abdominoplastyabdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck. Our Oak Brook, Elmhurst, and Hinsdale, IL, plastic surgeon Dr. Alexandrina Saulis understands that anyone interested in cosmetic surgery will have questions before deciding whether this is the right treatment option for them. Here are some questions about tummy tucks answered.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure in which our plastic surgeon will remove excess tissue and skin from the stomach to create tighter, firmer results around the midsection.

Is a tummy tuck different than liposuction?

It’s important to make the distinction between a tummy tuck and procedures that are designed to help patients with weight loss. While liposuction can be used to remove a significant amount of fat from an area of the body, a tummy tuck is a far more conservative option for those who are dealing with some bulging around the abdomen due to loose skin and excess fat. People should already be within a healthy, stable weight range before undergoing a tummy tuck.

How long is the recovery period?

Most patients will need to take one to two weeks off from work after surgery. Of course, there are many factors that can affect how long it takes for a patient to heal. For about six weeks you will wear a binder around your stomach to provide support and to reduce fluid buildup. You will also need to avoid any heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for several weeks.

How long do results last?

As with any cosmetic surgery, the goal is to create long-lasting and even permanent results. It’s important that after surgery that you maintain a healthy weight by participating in regular exercise and eating a healthy, balanced diet. If patients choose not to follow a healthier lifestyle they may find that their results do not last as long or are reversed over time. A tummy tuck cannot prevent the natural effects of aging.

Who is a good candidate for treatment?

As with any cosmetic treatment, an ideal candidate will have realistic goals and expectations regarding their treatment and the results they are looking to achieve. It’s important to understand that a tummy tuck will not help you lose weight and should not be considered a weight-loss tool.

An abdominoplasty is designed to help those who are within their ideal weight remove excess, sagging skin while improving the shape and contour of the body. Before undergoing any cosmetic procedure, our plastic surgeon Dr. Saulis will perform a physical examination to determine whether a tummy tuck is the right option for you.

Could a tummy tuck provide you with the tighter figure you want?

There are many people out there that despite a healthy diet and regular exercise aren’t seeing the results they want, particularly around abdominoplastytheir midsection. There are a lot of factors that play into excess fat and skin around the stomach and sides; fortunately, our Oak Brook, Elmhurst, and Hinsdale, IL, plastic surgeon Dr. Alexandrina Saulis offers abdominoplasty to help you achieve the appearance you are looking for.

What is abdominoplasty?

You’ve probably heard of an abdominoplasty being called by its colloquial name, “tummy tuck”. The goal of our Oak Brook, Elmhurst, and Hinsdale, IL, cosmetic surgeon is to make your stomach flatter by removing excess fat and skin while also tightening the abdominal muscles.

Even though an abdominoplasty shouldn’t be confused with liposuction, this is still considered a major surgery so it’s important to know more about it before deciding whether it’s right for you.

What happens during an abdominoplasty?

This will depend on whether you are getting a complete or partial abdominoplasty. During a complete tummy tuck, an incision will be made across the stomach from hipbone to hipbone. From there, we will remove excess fat and skin from the area while also repositioning the belly button.

If you are dealing with excess fat just below the navel, then a partial abdominoplasty may be all you need. While we will still remove excess fat and skin from this area, we won’t need to move the belly button.

How long is the recovery period?

You will have to wear a binder around your stomach for several weeks, which will provide the area with support and prevent fluid from building up. You will need to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity during your recovery period.

You will continue to come in for follow-up appointments to make sure everything is healing properly. During this time we can chat with you about when it might be safe to return to your regular physical activities.

Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

Healthy men and women who are looking to remove excess fat and skin around their midsections may find a tummy tuck to be the best treatment option for them. This can be a great cosmetic treatment for women who have excess skin or weakening abdominal muscles due to pregnancies, as well as patients who used to be obese but lost a lot of weight and are dealing with loose skin as a result.

A tummy tuck isn’t ideal for patients who still want to lose a lot of weight or for patients who are still considering getting pregnant, as pregnancy can affect the results of your abdominoplasty.

Dr. Alexandrina Saulis is proud to offer comprehensive cosmetic surgery in Hinsdale, Naperville, Oak Brook and Elmhurst, IL. Call Aesthetic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery today if you are ready to find out whether you could be a good candidate for abdominoplasty.
