Overcoming the post-operative pain and swelling

  • Dr. Saulis’ goal is to provide you with excellent results and a positive surgical experience. Controlling and minimizing post-operative pain is a critical factor in getting you back to normal function faster and making your experience as positive as possible.
  •  For body contouring procedures, Dr. Saulis helps control your post-operative pain by placing On-Q pain pumps catheters in the surgical site at the conclusion of the surgical procedure. These pain pumps infuse a local anesthetic continuously throughout the surgical area essentially numbing the surgical site post-operatively for about 3 days. This significant decrease in pain has resulted in a lower use of narcotics post-operatively and less subsequent post-operative nausea and vomiting. Many patients after a breast augmentation or breast reduction never even find the need to take a single narcotic tablet for pain control. These pain pumps have revolutionized medicine’s approach to post-surgical pain and should be part of your post-operative recovery.
  • For liposuction procedures, Dr. Saulis infuses the area from which fat is to be removed with a solution containing a local anesthetic. In most cases the entire procedure can be performed under a light sedation as the surgical area is completely numb. This local anesthetic is effective for 4-5 hours after surgery making the immediate post-operative period very comfortable. In most cases liposuction is much less painful than surgery requiring large skin incisions and most patients require less narcotic use in the post-operative period.
  • Scar Management - Dr. Saulis believes active scar management post-operatively offers the best results following surgery.  Biocorneum is an integral part of scar management.  To find out more about Biocorneum scar therapy solutions go to http://www.biocorneumplus.com
Research indicates that as many as 40% to 60% of men have a condition that creates excess fat deposits in the chest area. This occurs frequently among teen males because of hormones, but naturally resolves itself over time in most cases. For some men the condition is hereditary; for others medical conditions such as cancer and impaired liver function contribute to the problem. Today, men with fatty deposits that create raised breast areas can take advantage of a surgical technique to remove the fatty deposits and excess tissue.

Procedure
Male breast surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis using either a light general anesthetic or local anesthesia. A small incision is made at the bottom of the areola (the brown area encircling the nipple) or under the arm. The surgeon removes any excessive glandular tissue and skin. If fat removal is needed, liposuction may be conducted using the existing incision. Small sutures are used to close the incision. The surgery generally takes about 2 hours.

Recovery
Sometimes drainage tubes are used for the first two days to help remove excess fluid. The skin will likely be wrapped to help reduce swelling. Some swelling, bruising and numbness are normal and will subside over time. Stitches are removed in 1 to 2 weeks after the surgery. Most patient return to work within 1 to 3 days. An elastic pressure garment is worn for 3 to 6 weeks, and sports and strenuous activity are limited for 3 to 4 weeks after the surgery. Patients should avoid sun exposure for 6 months.
