What You Need To Know About Breast Augmentation

There are many reasons why people choose breast augmentation. You may want breast augmentation if you:

  • Have had a mastectomy and want to restore your breasts
  • Want your breasts to be the same size and shape
  • Have lost a substantial amount of weight and want more shapely breasts
  • Want better proportions of your breasts to your body

During breast augmentation, you will be placed under either local or general anesthesia. Small incisions are made either through your armpits, in the crease under your breasts, or between the areola and breast tissue. The skin is retracted to create a pocket. A breast implant is inserted into the pocket and centered on the breast. The implant is filled with saline, and the incision is closed with sutures. The entire procedure takes between 1 and 3 hours and can be performed either as an inpatient or on an outpatient basis.

After surgery, drainage tubes may be placed for a few days to help drain excess fluid. Your plastic surgeon may also prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection, and pain medication to make you more comfortable. Swelling and bruising at the surgery site are common and can last from 3 to 5 weeks. Wearing a surgical bra is often helpful in recovery to help support your breasts. You will need to avoid strenuous activity for up to 4 weeks.
